Editor,
I illegally parked in the UNMH structure in a mad dash to make it to my 9:30 a.m. class. It was wrong, and I should be punished for such things. However, jeopardizing my safety as part of the punishment is totally out of line.
I had class until 3:15 p.m. When I arrived at my car at 3:20 p.m., I found pieces of paper all over the windshield and a large, orange parking boot on the left tire. I read on one of the notices that the boot would only be removed with a $50 fee between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.
This is an atrocity. I left my car in an illegal place, not harming anyone, and UNM Parking and Transportation Services felt it had the power to take my car away for an entire evening - a punishment many reckless drivers do not even receive. I was fortunate enough to have my mother come and get me, but if not, then what provisions would have been made? Where would I have gone until 7 a.m.? What if this had happened on a Friday and not a Tuesday?
The right to fine people for violating parking regulations is within reason; impounding a vehicle and leaving a helpless student in a parking garage on one of the most dangerous campuses in the country is not even remotely reasonable. Please do something to fix the dangerous and ill-planned parking violation regulations at UNM.
