Faculty, students should be wary of new president

Editor,

Today is a great day in Stillwater, Okla. David Schmidly is now your problem. I feel sorry for UNM students. I hope your faculty has the guts to stand up to Schmidly and keep him in check. Ours could not or would not, and the school suffered as a result.

Remember, students, you do have power. When the problems start, you need to have the guts to stand up and fight for what is best for you, not what is best for Schmidly or the Board of Regents.

There are some bright sides, however. Are there some deans you do not like? They will probably be gone within a couple of years. Oklahoma State lost quite a few during the Schmidly reign. Do you have any wealthy alumni? Schmidly will wine and dine them and get their money. You may have to rename some buildings or colleges in their honor. Better yet, maybe some of your students can lose their affordable housing just so your wealthy patrons can have an entire portion of the campus built in their honor. But who cares? It is all about the money.

I truly do feel sorry for your University. But if you are anywhere near Stillwater the day Schmidly leaves, make sure and come by. There will be dancing in the streets.
