Editor,
I attended the last forum for the UNM presidential candidates. Even though UNM is an institution with many thousands of students, less than 12 students attended this forum with me. I'm very discouraged by the utter apathy of most of the student body. Doesn't anyone care about who his or her president will be? All of us had an opportunity to address our issues and concerns. To those that did not attend, don't complain and whine about the new president, because now you have no excuses.
I posed two questions to David Schmidly, the final UNM presidential candidate. When I started working here on campus as a work-study student, I had to wait an excruciating three weeks for my first paycheck. This unjust, absurd policy needs to change. I asked how he would change this policy of the Payroll Department. He directly answered that no one likes to get paid late, and that he would work with students to resolve this problem.
The second question I asked was how he would regulate textbook prices, tuition rates and other costs. He responded that the University needs to buy the textbooks for the students and contract them to the students. Also, he said the faculty needs to become more sensitive to these prices.
Conclusively, it seems that Schmidly has the capacity and skills to lead an institution such as UNM.
