Departing regent worked hard for students, state

Editor,

I am writing to say thank you to an exceptional person, Rosalyn Nguyen, for her service to UNM and to the state of New Mexico during her two-year tenure as student regent. Nguyen has demonstrated the qualities of a true leader, working tirelessly behind the scenes to lobby state legislators, meet with the Board of Regents and advocate for UNM with Gov. Bill Richardson. In all this, she has placed student interests first. She is the kind of person who seeks responsible positions not for the glamour or notoriety they bring, but because she cares. We could ask for no better

representative.

The student regent selection process is not - and should not be - a popularity contest. It is easy to understand why a special committee of students recommended Nguyen as a finalist for student regent almost two years ago and why Richardson selected her for the position. She is bright, professional, ethical and poised. Through her diligence and her unshakable integrity, Nguyen has earned my complete confidence and the warm support of the students she has represented so well.

Nguyen understands the issues challenging UNM and New Mexico. She grew up in Tucumcari and was very active as an undergraduate student at UNM. She has been a tremendously effective student representative, all while pursuing a joint J.D. and M.B.A.

I expect to continue to hear that Nguyen is doing great things for New Mexico and UNM in the future. Thank you for your service.
