Editor,
One of the many blessings of living in this country is freedom of speech. However, after passing by Smith Plaza last week and witnessing religious proselytization, I noticed that the event quickly devolved into inaccurate and hate-mongering speech about the Islamic faith and culture. I cannot understand why people feel the need to manipulate onlookers' emotions about Islam, which is already a widely misunderstood religion that is poorly presented in the media.
It is true that everyone has the right to freedom of speech and the free practice of their religion, but is hateful and ignorant speech necessary? My answer would be no. Religious groups can coexist based on fundamental beliefs such as justice, social and economic equality and love for God and God's creations. Hate speech to create confusion or division or to recruit members should not be used.
There is enough animosity in the world to last 100 generations. The opportunity for peace can happen starting today - we just need to respect each other's differences and appreciate our similarities.
