Elections commissioner has conflicting interests

Editor,

I am writing to express my extreme disappointment in the actions of a current ASUNM senator and elections commissioner.

According to the ASUNM Constitution - Article VII, Section 5B - two senators are assigned to the Elections Commission as voting members. Chris Knight is one such senator. In order to assure the validity and fairness of the election, it is a general rule that commissioners are to stay unbiased and are not allowed to campaign for any candidate

or slate.

Article I, Section 2F of the election code states that the elections commissioners will conduct themselves at all times in a manner that promotes public confidence in the integrity and impartiality of the election process, and that they will not publicly support or campaign for any candidate for the duration of their terms.

At the NMPIRG-sponsored presidential debate Monday, Knight, a senator and elections commissioner, proceeded to campaign for the PAC slate by distributing handbills to passersby.

Such dirty campaigning speaks to the corruption, or maybe the simple ignorance, of the elections commissioner and senator mentioned above. Irresponsible actions such as these are not welcome in any form of government.

I charge all candidates to be fair, responsible and well-mannered in the coming days, for if you have to cheat to win, you are the true loser.
