Editor,
I was involved in the Geek Chic Auction in the SUB as an auctionee this past Friday, hosted by the Society of Women Engineers. I believe in the worthy vision of this society, which is to increase and retain
female enrollment in the technical fields of engineering and computer science. There is not enough female involvement in these career fields, as reflected by the fact that nearly all faculty members in the College of Engineering are men. It could be that most women have a proclivity to choose more nurturing careers than men, such as nursing or dentistry.
However, I know that women can integrate and differentiate functions and balance chemical equations as well as men. They should not limit themselves to being nurses, doctors and housewives. If I had a girlfriend, I would wait for her to finish her engineering degree so we could both retire at an early age. I strongly encourage all freshmen women to seriously consider a degree in engineering or computer science, if they are still undecided about their career choice.
