Editor,
I would like to encourage all UNM undergraduates to vote in the ASUNM elections Wednesday. I would also encourage all UNM undergraduates to vote for the PAC candidates. Friday's edition of "Daily Lobo Asks You" illustrated a long-standing problem within the structure of ASUNM. Junior student Graham Chouteau said, "I don't really see what ASUNM does to help me. I mean, it's not made clear." This statement is, at the very least, partially correct. Although ASUNM is by no means a closed organization, our lack of student outreach initiatives is what propagates the existence of this information gap. As I have said in the past, as student leaders, it is our responsibility to take the lead and create initiatives that allow the student body to feel like it is a part of
student government.
If elected, the PAC candidates would like to reach out to the student body. For example, in an effort to increase voter turnout, PAC senators have worked hard to ensure the online election bills were passed in time for them to be implemented during this election. PAC feels that as elected officials, ASUNM senators need to spend more time out of the office, talking to students about student issues. You can see this reflected in its campaign. PAC currently has a table set up outside of Mesa Vista Hall. It will be there until the new online polls close at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. I encourage anyone who feels disconnected from ASUNM and its candidates to stop by and talk to PAC candidates one-on-one. Remember, as voters, it is our civic duty to participate in elections and to seek out information in order to make an informed vote.
