Tuition increases should actually benefit students

Editor,

The unanimous approval by the Board of Regents to increase tuition is absurd. Maybe if its reasons were a bit better, it wouldn't be. First of all, how does raising tuition help in hiring minority faculty? Does it cost more to hire minorities? I don't see how refraining from raising our tuition keeps the University from hiring minorities. Also, what is an "office of institutional diversity"? What would this office actually do? I really think making special new offices for such purposes is just an excuse to waste money and push an agenda. If we really want equality, we should treat everyone the same and fairly and not go around making up such offices that waste money.

The raising of tuition in order to increase faculty pay is an acceptable thing, but only 5 percent of this tuition increase is going toward that.

The University needs to realize that students have a hard enough time paying for tuition. Raising it another $200 or more every semester may not seem like much to the big wigs who make too much money, but to students just scraping by, it is a big blow to the wallet. If UNM wants to increase tuition, it should have better excuses than the ones it is giving right now.
