Editor,
On April 23, Joe Moser from the staff of Rep. Heather Wilson met with members and supporters of Population Connection in her district to discuss the importance of comprehensive sex education and voluntary family planning programs worldwide. I attended the meeting and would like to express my concern to Wilson for not supporting the Responsible Education About Life Act and the Global Democracy Promotion Act.
Under the REAL Act, the U.S. Congress could set up the first-ever dedicated federal funding stream in the form of federal grants to state governments to conduct comprehensive sex education programs. The education would be evidence-based, medically accurate, age-appropriate and broad, providing full information about multiple topics, including both abstinence and contraception.
Additionally, the GDP Act would prohibit the denial of U.S. funds to overseas groups based on the medical services they provide. It would remove restrictions on funding for voluntary family planning programs, thus ensuring healthier communities and a more sustainable future through activities that promote safe motherhood, train health care workers and provide contraceptive supplies. These programs also help moderate population growth, reduce poverty and ease environmental pressures.
Wilson's constituents who support comprehensive sex education and worldwide access to voluntary family planning services should voice their concern and urge her to support the REAL Act and the GDP Act.
