City should dish out free parking passes for students

Editor,

Now that the city of Albuquerque is buying bus passes for students who are too lazy to get a license to drive a car, I think it's about time the city also starts to pay for our parking passes.

After all, anyone with a parking pass knows just how much of a hassle it is to rake up enough money every semester so that we might have a chance to find a place to park. Most of the time, the lots are full because someone in the parking and transportation bureaucracy decided to over-issue permits.

Why should these people get their parking paid for while the rest of us are left to roam around in the parking lots, aimlessly for a spot that might not even be there? These people should just deal with the financial burden like the rest of us do. Bus passes for college students cost only about $12 a month. Those of us who drive have to pay a much more hefty amount each semester. I have to pay $112 every time I want to renew my permit. Compared to that sum, $12 a month is nothing.

The least UNM could do is to pay for our traffic tickets when we have to park in another lot because the lot that we paid for is taken up, and we have to get to class in five minutes. Don't hold your breath, though. UNM would probably have to appropriate millions of dollars for that.
