Republicans would rather save face than save lives

Editor,

I thought the Grand Old Party had sunk to the bottom of the mucky, mucky barrel when it continued to support the administration's unjustified invasion and occupation of Iraq. After all, this five-year occupation of Iraq has resulted in the deaths of more than 3,000 poor U.S. soldiers and the maiming of thousands more. However, I was recently proved wrong.

Through a process of osmosis, I saw the GOP go through the bottom of the barrel into the dark and dank ooze under the barrel where only unsavory characters live and thrive. This osmosis occurred when the GOP decided to promote its continued support for the occupation of Iraq by using the dead and injured soldiers in television ads. It appears that the new Republican Party is devoid of any shame.

The actions of our Republican congressmen remind me of the ugly sisters in the Cinderella story. It was obvious to everybody that the glass slipper did not fit them, yet they kept insisting that it did in order to get what they wanted.

Likewise, it is obvious to the majority of the American people that the invasion and our continued occupation of Iraq, along with the continuing deaths and injuries of our soldiers and Iraqi civilians, are unjustified. Yet, our Republican congressmen keep insisting they are justified in order to save face and minimize the damage to the Republican Party.

I hope that they pay dearly in the future elections.
