Bible too dated to prove homosexuality is wrong

Editor,

This letter is in response to Jason Brown's paradoxical letter published in the Daily Lobo on Tuesday. The very definition of a bigot is one who strongly opposes the views of others based not on reason but on frivolous things such as creed, race or uneducated opinion.

In order to prove Brown's bigotry, I ask this question: Why is homosexuality wrong? What are gay men and women doing that, up until about 30 years ago, was enough to get them killed?

Are they mutants with some horrible deformity? Are they inhuman creatures deserving of pity?

Come to think of it, since gay people seem to be just like everyone else on the planet, why is it that people crusade against them? It's because they still believe in fairy tales.

While most of us outgrow Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, much of America continues to believe in things such as God and

creationism. And even worse, they put their faith in a book of verses and advice that 2,000 years ago may have made sense. Times have changed, and things such as the Bible just don't make sense anymore.

All this stuff about justified killing in the name of your fable, not wearing clothes woven of two or more fibers, never planting more than one crop in a field, and the taboo against eating anything but fish is bizarre and antiquated.

Maybe the people who wrote these guidelines believed they made sense because someone told them to believe in it. Since all of these things are only spoken of in the Old Testament, Biblical scholars can't just pick and choose which ones are ridiculous and which ones to continue following. It's either you believe it all or you don't.

To some degree, I envy the believers. When I was a kid, I was always comforted by the belief that if I was being good, Santa Claus would read my mind and bring me something wonderful. I guess as long as one believes in fairy tales, they don't really have any need to stop and ask questions. They don't need to do any thinking, as it's all done for them.

I guess I'll just continue to use my brain, as tiresome as it is, to learn, to change and to adapt. Since gay people don't seem to do any more harm or good than normal people, I've decided that they should be left well enough alone.

According to the theory of social Darwinism, ideas that are useless to the believer will eventually fade from society. With each passing generation, homosexuality becomes less and less of an arguing point as gay men and women enter the social sphere. They are our friends, our co-workers, our bosses and our celebrities. They are everywhere, and society doesn't seem to be collapsing with any more or less acceleration than it was before. In short, I would like everyone to just step outside their margins and ask themselves: Why does the fairy tale condemn homosexuals? What have they done that makes them any different from the rest of humanity?
