Editor,
I would like to apologize to the Mexican government for many things that are too numerous to list in a letter or a column or, probably, a 1,000-page book. I would like to point out that D. Glover's comments published in the Daily Lobo on Wednesday are racist in nature, much like the arguments of those who would like to make English the official language. Subtle racism is still racism, and I find it more repulsive than overt racism. Mexico is our closest neighbor, closer to UNM geographically than Washington, D.C. As a native New Mexican who grew up in southern New Mexico, I've had several dealings with Mexicans, and I've
developed the following stereotypes in my mind: Mexicans are honest; Mexicans are clean; and Mexicans produce the finest Fender Stratocasters - way better than American Strats.
I love New Mexico and, therefore, I love Mexico. If Glover can't handle that, then maybe he needs to move somewhere where the majority think like him - say rural Georgia or maybe upper Michigan. My shame is that I don't yet speak fluent Spanish, but I do have a saying. It's my saying, and I'm very proud of it: "No hagas ignorante tu lenguaje officiál." Isn't that a great
saying?
Viva Nuevo MÇxico, Estados Unidos. Viva MÇxico.
