Narrow interpretations of Bible lead to bigotry

Editor,

I was reading the letter by Daniel Martinez published in the Daily Lobo on Tuesday on whether homosexuals deserve fair and equal treatment.

I want to thank Martinez for giving us this perfect interpretation of an ancient book that is supposed to dictate every single aspect of our lives. If this sounds like I'm being incredibly sarcastic, then it has fulfilled its purpose.

Throughout the letter, Martinez shows a surprising ignorance of biology, geology, meteorology and international politics. I want to ask him whether God was punishing Florida when it got hit by four hurricanes. The poor health and high poverty rates in the deep South is also part of God's divine retribution, and of course, those tornadoes in the Midwest are all a part of God's divine justice.

Such views are ridiculous. To claim that nonconformity to a narrow interpretation of the Bible is immoral and that those who don't believe in the Bible are not worthy of fair and equal treatment is not only an attack on nonChristians, but on Christians who don't share the same views as high-and-mighty, morally superior Christians such as Martinez.

As an atheist, I find such views not only offensive but, quite frankly, immoral. Fortunately for Martinez, I believe that everyone

deserves the right to be treated fairly and equally, since we all don't share the exact same moral definitions. So, he should have every right to speak his views, even though they personally offend not only me, but a lot of others.

However, same-sex couples should not feel compelled to defend themselves against Martinez and his bigoted attacks, as they are free to live whatever life they see fit.

I found it quite ironic that Martinez brought up the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in his claim of God's wrath. As it was the work of religious fundamentalists working in his name, maybe there is really some truth

to it.
