Editor,
I am writing to correct the impression given in an article published Wednesday that the Staff Council rejected the hate crimes proposals. In fact, the executive of the Staff Council withdrew consideration of this measure from the last council meeting agenda, so the body never had a chance to discuss it or vote for or against it.
The views expressed at the regents meeting appear to have been the opinion of the Executive
Committee of the council or possibly just the council president. Absent any motion before the full council, this cannot be considered the view of Staff Council as a whole. There is a full meeting of the council on Tuesday, where I hope the president will clarify to the body what was actually said. Perhaps the Daily Lobo should attend the meeting so that facts can be reported. As far as I can see, it is still open to the council to consider this proposal and to either support it or reject it by a vote of the members.
