Violation of U.S. code no reason to desecrate flag

Editor,

Unless you are of American-Indian descent, all Americans are immigrants or distant relatives of immigrants. Even our noble founding fathers - like Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington - chose to flee from the British throne to establish the original 13 American colonies.

D. Glover, in all of his liberal glory, has consciously chosen to ignore this fact in his letter published in the Daily Lobo on Wednesday. Furthermore, I truly admire and thank Peter Ryan Lynch for his eight years of military service to our country, but I believe that he was absolutely wrong in destroying the Mexican flag.

As a new U.S. citizen originally from Mexico, I found that to be very disrespectful and offensive, because I have a special place in my heart for my native country. Yes, flying a foreign flag on U.S. soil unaccompanied by the American flag is in direct violation of federal law, but America is a place that encourages cultural diversity. Obviously, the beautiful stars and stripes should always be flown above every other flag. However, it would be wrong to destroy any foreign flag, and Lynch should have just returned the Mexican flag to the proper authority.

Furthermore, I agree that the UNM authorities should make a formal apology to everyone for allowing a foreign flag to fly illegally for three days.

Conclusively, it would be completely wrong to press any charges against a man who risked his life to defend America on the battleground.
