Before voting, know facts on CNM district expansion

Editor,

Like most UNM students, I received an e-mail from President David Schmidly about the upcoming vote on the UNM/CNM campus in Rio Rancho. I understand why Schmidly would want this vote - growth for UNM is a good thing to him. I was, however, amazed to see that Schmidly asked students for this positive vote.

As college students, we should not be persuaded without knowledge of the repercussions of our actions. We need to know both sides of the argument to make any informed decision.

The land for the proposed 40-acre UNM/CNM campus is not developed, roads and clearing of land must occur, utilities and water lines will need to be laid, and there will be tax increases for certain areas.

All people should have a voice within this democracy, especially students. As educated people, we should make educated decisions. This should be the same for the upcoming 2008 election. Know your own stance, know what the candidates stand for, and let your voice be heard.

I encourage all people to gain knowledge of this proposition before they go and vote on it. Learn what the repercussions can be and what it will do for the economy and environment here and in Rio Rancho because this affects you.
