Editor,
The Mountain West Conference Championship cross country meet last Saturday showcased the best athletes UNM and New Mexico have to offer.
Jeremy Johnson, an All-American and MWC cross country champion, is an outstanding individual. He is a great student, starting a graduate program in math this fall, and a terrific athlete. He is a role model for all student-athletes. He is also a delightful young man to know.
Along with Jeremy, our cross country runners did a very good job. There can't be a more
demanding sport than that one. The meet was well-run, which speaks to the dedication of the UNM athletic staff, all of the track team members and the track community. It was put together at the last minute when the fires in San Diego made it impossible to hold it there.
Erin Howarth, assistant track coach, told me that much of the success of the meet is due to the help of Matt and Mark Henry, former UNM track coaches, and their friends and family putting it together. We are very lucky to have such a high caliber of athletes and UNM track supporters. Thanks to all of you for an enjoyable day.
