Editor,
This is an open letter to all UNM students. One of President David Schmidly's first priorities was to establish a division of enrollment management that would bring all the critical enrollment processes students must navigate under the responsibility of one person instead of three or four.
I am that person. Our first goal is student success, and if you encounter difficulty with admissions, registration, financial aid, billing or transcript delivery, then you are distracted from your primary reason for being here. We want to hear about the problem.
Students can report problems by writing to Tellus@unm.edu. My commitment is that I will read these submissions and respond with a plan to address the concerns. We have improved key processes, including decreasing turnaround time and introducing a student-friendly financial commitment policy. Staff members who are not fully engaged in serving students in a supportive manner will not be part of our team. We have had many positive responses and letters from students praising employees who have made life-changing interventions on their behalf.
Clearly, there is still much work to be accomplished. Look for better communication, a one-stop virtual enrollment environment, and an easy-to-read financial statement in the near future.
