Smoking ban isn't based on scientific proof of threat

Editor,

Smokers may be a minority, but ardent anti-smokers are an even smaller minority. Why their view should determine policy is a mystery. Many nonsmokers have no wish to impose a draconian ban on smoking. Smokers have been driven outside and live with that circumstance. In fact, they have become a hearty breed, like the Vikings, able to withstand howling gales and a scorching sun. For the rabid band of anti-smokers to now chase them down outdoors is neither civilized nor driven by common sense.

A hundred years ago, smokers and nonsmokers worked it out. Trains had smoking cars and nonsmoking cars. One couldn't smoke all over the house, but could in the billiard room or

library. Smoking was allowed in most outdoor settings.

No report I have seen has stated outdoor smoking presents a health hazard. To ban smoking on campus would be a measure driven by philosophical zeal rather than scientific proof of any threat.

I hope the Board of Regents either rejects the proposed ban or adopts the middle way. If the latter, I hope it chooses designated smoking areas with some regard for the smokers - not grim, remote, boxed-off little bits of concrete and asphalt. One solution might be to ban smoking according to distance from doorways. Even 30 feet from an entrance would leave a handful of tables at the SUB and many of the benches on campus as places one could pause and smoke.
