Editor,
I was washing my hands in the SUB restroom a few days ago when I noticed a full trash bin. What caught my eye wasn't so much the fact that it was full, but the two aluminum soda cans on top. On closer examination, there were also two flattened cardboard boxes resembling what the SUB uses for box lunches, a Daily Lobo and a clear plastic water bottle.
That trip to the restroom sensitized me to unrecycled waste for the rest of the day. So, when I walked by one of President David
Schmidly's inaugural events, I noticed all the throwaway water bottles being handed out and the fact that all the food was being served on throwaway plastic plates and cups with no recycling bin in sight.
Since that day, I've begun to notice how much the SUB depends on single-use items that will wind up clogging our landfills and not be recycled. If the Frontier Restaurant can use real plates, glasses and silverware, couldn't UNM create a policy that requires food vendors to do the same? Shouldn't UNM students know better than to just throw away aluminum cans?
