Vehicles on campus pose threat to disabled students

Editor,

I had the opportunity to comment on the dangerous bicycle, skateboard, motor scooter and motorcycle situation at UNM over the air Thursday on KUNM. These vehicles, prohibited by UNM policy in pedestrian areas, pose a enhanced threat to students with disabilities. I will be filing a complaint over unsafe conditions with the New Mexico Human Rights Commission over the situation that has caused me permanent injury. In addition, the issue is complicated by deliberate avoidance of the issue, lack of enforcement and poor leadership at UNM. It does appear that the problem has a financial

component.

Perhaps, disabled students should wear bike helmets, as all bicyclists and skateboarders under the age of 18 are required to do at UNM and also reflectors and flags to bring attention to the lack of leadership and the unsafe conditions at UNM. This exploitation of the vulnerability of disabled students must come to an end.

Students with disabilities have rights, and our rights to a safe campus and access to education are being violated.
