Editor,
I was extremely disappointed to see an ad in the Daily Lobo for a meeting hosted by Peer Mentoring for Graduate Students of Color on Tuesday. I was even more disappointed in the topic "Are We Minorities?" for a critical roundtable.
In today's world of ethnic and racial sensitivity, it is hard to believe that a state-funded university tolerates an organization that openly limits itself to persons of color. I happen to be white. However, I have always considered white to be a color. If I am precluded from this group, then what is color? At what shade does this group draw the line between colored and noncolored?
I guess the overall question is, why can't we just have a group called "Peer Mentoring for Graduates?" Clearly, it could accomplish the same things while not placing an "of color" caveat on the group.
Any reasonable individual would agree that if a group called "Peer Mentoring for White Guys" was formed, the masses would scream racism. It is clear that the "of color" part of the organization's name indicates that some color of skin pigment does not qualify to join the organization.
How can the PMGC not think this is offensive to whomever it is that doesn't qualify? In fact, it makes it appear that the PMGC is promoting exactly what they appear to disdain - racism.

As for the topic on their agenda, "Are We Minorities?" no discussion is required. They have already defined themselves as a minority by limiting themselves to graduates of color. I hope upon the conclusion of their meeting, the PMGC comes to the realization that they are, in fact, a racist minority. Ask any colorless graduate.
