Editor,
I applaud the Daily Lobo for following up on the Indian students assault case. This shows the commitment of the newspaper in ensuring that students on campus are safe and secure.
Turan Johnson has accumulated more than 20 court cases against him in the past three years. Charges have been dropped against him in many cases because he was found incompetent to stand trial. According to the laws of the land, if a person cannot stand trial due to incompetency, then he or she must be released immediately. This can create a dangerous situation for the East Indian community here in
Albuquerque.
Janet Blair, spokeswoman for the court, has rightly said in the Daily Lobo report published on Thursday, "It was a simple battery this time. But what happens if he gets a gun, and it turns into felony?"
I am happy the district attorney's office is taking note of this complex issue, and I hope Johnson will be provided with the help that he needs to ensure that the safety of international students on campus is not compromised.
