Editor,
The Ronald McDonald House Charities has done amazing work by helping ill children recover since 1974. It has helped thousands of children get through their illnesses by footing their medical bills and giving their families a place to stay while their children are at the hospital.
While the organization is funded mainly by donations, UNM can give a lot of money to aid its activities. There is a Pop Tab Collection Program wherein money from recycled aluminum cans can be given to the organization to help sick children. This money could be given to the three programs of the organization along with grants.
Ronald McDonald House Charities has three programs that help children all over the world. The first is the Ronald McDonald House, that helps families of critically ill children receiving treatment at nearby hospitals by giving them a place to stay while their child is treated at the hospital.
The second is the Ronald McDonald Family Room, which is an extension of the Ronald McDonald House program. These family rooms are located near hospitals, and they are a comforting place for families to relax and visit their children outside the hospital setting.
The third is the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, which brings affordable medical, dental and health education services to children in underserved areas. We, as a University, could offer separate recycling receptacles for aluminum cans and a weekly or monthly pickup at all dormitories. Everyone living in the dormitories should help this collection process by writing to Dean of Students and Director of Residence Life Randy Boeglin at 280 Student Services Center, MSC 06 3600. Please aid ill children everywhere.
