Editor,
It seems there is a letter published in the Daily Lobo every day about the Palestinians.
Thursday's letter by Amjad Musleh criticized the Israelis for collective punishment of the inhabitants of the Gaza Strip. Monday's letter by Alaa El Maoued decried the condition of the Gaza Strip residents and accused Israel of terrorism for responding to 150 Qassam rockets fired by Hamas into southern Israel.
Musleh, Israel does not believe in collective guilt, nor does she practice collective punishments. Despite the atrocities committed against the Jewish people by some Germans under Hitler, Israel has a close and cordial relationship with the government and the people of post-Nazi Germany. Indeed, the Righteous Among the Nations - non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust - include 443 Germans. They are honored at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem.
El Maoued goes on to write, "The U.N. discovered that from June to October 2007, 400 rockets and 510 mortars were fired into Israel." Thus, there were at least 550 rockets and 510 mortars fired into Israel since June 2007. And the Israeli response is a temporary blockade. What did El Maoued expect - a Valentine's Day card?
As I have written before, the Palestinian people have been used as pawns, first by the Arab nations going back to 1948 and, more recently, by Iranian and Syrian armed and funded extremists groups. They deserve much better and will achieve much more when they examine how their own house is built.
