Editor,
This letter is in response to the "Lobolition" to be held March 4 where students can vent their frustrations on a salvage vehicle to benefit the athletic clubs.
In a way to show school spirit, students are invited to take a bat and have at it. I personally do not understand the violent and wasteful display. In a place of education, it seems like we could organize a show of community spirit and support our teams far better than bashing a car.
At one point, the cars involved did provide transport and could once again be used to assist those in need within our community. I am constantly seeing advertisements on PBS and billboards and various charities encouraging us to donate our unwanted vehicles.
For example, the American Lung Association states, "From classic and antique autos to salvage automobiles, your donated car may earn you a tax deduction, and it will help us make a difference in the lives of others."
The American Cancer Society encourages us to donate our vehicles because, "The money raised is central to supporting our mission, which aims to fight cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service. Together, we share a hope for a tomorrow free of cancer."

There are far more charities that need our unwanted vehicles, too. I understand midterms are stressful, but there are far better ways to show we care for our community and a larger cause other than ourselves.
For those who are without transportation, it could be dicey getting to and from any destination. I challenge those who think it is OK to be wasteful to go without any form of transportation for at least two weeks and still advocate this display of waste.
