Daily Lobo hasn't covered Aramark issue thoroughly

Editor,

The media has the responsibility of framing a message after taking into account all sides of an issue. The coverage pertaining to the current food-service provider is no exception.

There are issues with the food being provided in the SUB and other dining options. Why didn't the Daily Lobo interview the representative from the Student Health Center or the only registered nutritionist on campus about Aramark's comments, as both of them attended the GPSA meeting where two resolutions pertaining to food options were passed unanimously?

Why didn't the Daily Lobo look back at the numerous surveys about food options on campus to see that students want better options and are not happy with the current vendor?

There's a myth that healthier food costs more. Why weren't student groups or students asked if healthier or local food is worth the potential higher price of healthier options? Why didn't the Daily Lobo look into other campuses where Aramark has raised the cost of food plans, such as Arizona State University?

Student groups are required under the current food-service monopoly to use only Aramark catering in the SUB. Why didn't the Daily Lobo ask Aramark about catering options for student groups celebrating Ramadan or kosher food or affordable food for student groups that get a limited budget from ASUNM or other funding sources? Also, was Aramark asked about vegan options?

There are numerous students and student groups who have been working to make better and more healthy food options available on our campus.

Why didn't the Daily Lobo interview GPSA, PIRG or other student organizations that are working on behalf of students who have to eat in La Posada or the SUB?

In addition, I would also urge Jamie Koch to listen to students. He should represent the interests of students and not be so quick to comment on "organizers coming in and raising heck." There is a process in place where a committee developed the request for proposals and is reviewing the bids from various providers.

I would hope the regents would wait and see the results of the committee's work and the input of other stakeholders.

Accurate and fair media would have looked at all the angles. I hope the Daily Lobo would strive to cover campus issues with this in mind.
