Editor,
Aramark, the provider of food not only to UNM but to numerous state penitentiaries as well, is one of the biggest abusers of workers' rights by exploiting its hold on numerous campuses around the country.
When Aramark promised to renovate the dining hall, Arizona State University gladly signed a $30 million contract, unwittingly putting itself at the whim of Aramark for subsequent years to come.
Since that day, the base meal plan at that university has jumped from $500 a semester to $900, and food options were all but eliminated.
UNM's contract with Aramark is coming to a close at the end of April. Aramark has, however, said it will renovate La Posada if UNM renews its contract.
Sound familiar? Members of UNM PIRG and other student groups are meeting every Friday at 3:30 p.m. to discuss different ways to persuade the regents not to sign another contract with Aramark.
