Editor,
Melanie Unruh, in her letter published in Wednesday's edition of the Daily Lobo, is proving a very common and troublesome fact about certain sectors of American society.
In her letter, she asks if licensed gun holders would make the campus safer and answers her own question with a "no."
This is a classic example of what many think to be true, but, in actuality, is false. Those of us who choose to become certified gun holders and licensed concealed-weapon carriers are more likely to be lawful than your average citizen.
We choose to become licensed concealed-weapon carriers because, as of now, a concealed-firearm carrier requires a license in the state of New Mexico. People who are going to commit atrocities are not going to obey the law.
Those of us who own and use guns while operating within the law know the responsibilities of gun ownership. We are not, as some people would like to believe, idiots. We know what we are doing.

Some people forget a fair amount of gun owners are former or current law enforcement and military personnel. We are prepared to aid in the event of a shooting, as we can subdue violent attackers.
However, this has been made impossible because people such as Unruh forget we don't carry guns on campus because we are law-abiding citizens.
Unruh and her crowd have disarmed those of us who are lawful, willing and capable of defending our schools, so those who are unlawful may do others harm.
