Lobos claim victory against three conference opponents

The UNM tennis team clawed its way to victory last weekend, racking up wins against Utah, Air Force and San Diego State.

The Lobos beat Utah 4-3 on Friday before following up the win with a clean sweep against Air Force, 7-0 on Saturday.

The Lobos closed out the weekend by defeating San Diego State 5-2 on Sunday.

After the Lobos lost the doubles match to SDSU, UNM's Max Jones made quick work of Matan Shitrit, defeating him in two sets, 6-0, 6-0 on Sunday.

"It was my senior day," Jones said. "I was just fired up to come out here and have a performance like that."

UNM head coach Alan Dils said that Jones' win set the tone for the rest of the day.

"We did fantastic," he said. "Max was able to go out there and just demolish that guy. But we recognize this is a team effort. And yes, there is great individual accolades with Max being nationally ranked, but I guarantee you he would trade it in a heartbeat for this team to be successful."

From there, UNM took a 3-1 lead as Graeme Kassautzki and Kamil Pajkowski won their singles matches.

Kassautzki won 6-0 and 7-5, while Pajkowski closed out the No. 5 matchup, winning 6-4 and 7-5.

The Aztecs would close the gap as the Bartosz Golas squeaked by Lobo Johnny Parkes in three sets, 7-5, 5-7 and 7-5, in an epic back-and-forth battle.

Ultimately, UNM proved to be too much for the Aztecs as Miles Bugby, and Joe Wood won the final two matches, securing a 5-2 Lobo victory.

With the win, UNM improved to 16-6 overall and 3-0 in the Mountain West Conference.

Despite the early success, Mils said his team still has room for improvement.

"We have had a lot of good wins," he said. "But we have three more big matches next week - Thursday, Friday and Saturday against UNLV, BYU and TCU. Then we want the conference championship - then we want to go to the NCAA tournament. We still have a lot of goals ahead of us. But we have heart and desire and that's what it takes."
