Respecting flag etiquette preserves symbol of unity

Editor,

I will not argue that Peter Lynch should not have gotten any punishment for destroying the Mexican flag. Though I feel his anger was justified, destroying someone else's flag is stepping over the line.

However, I feel this whole unfortunate situation could have been avoided if people were more aware of flag etiquette in this country. Technically, flying a foreign flag without the American flag is historically an act of war.

Luckily, these are no longer the days when such a statement has much political merit. The fact remains, however, that Lynch would not have felt possessed to destroy the flag had anyone listened to him when he notified them that the flag was improperly displayed.

Sadly, improper flag display is not uncommon. I have seen American flags flying at night while improperly lighted, flags tattered beyond recognition and state and cause flags flown superior to the American flag.

I know that to a lot of people, flag etiquette seems like a lot of pomp and circumstance, but we've fought wars on American soil in order to justify and preserve that very symbol of American freedom and unity. It deserves our respect.
