Reporters, protesters stripped of their rights at convention

Editor,

A protester was arrested Monday heading from the Republican National Convention to the protest outside of the convention center. Her crime? Entering a restricted area between the convention center and the protest area.

Why should this action offend citizens of the U.S.? The person in question, Amy Goodman, was a progressive reporter. As a credentialed reporter, she had open access to the RNC. And as a reporter, she should have had open access to the protests staged outside.

What exactly does freedom of the press mean when the police, an institution of the state, can arrest any reporter for doing his or her job? This travesty must not go unnoticed. Three other journalists and hundreds of protesters were arrested with dubious cause. We must stand up for the right to freedom of speech and protest. Our Constitution is more than some old words on a piece of paper.
