Wright remains humble after being picked by 2008 Super Bowl champs

Two Lobos drafted in NFL

New York media, here DeAndre Wright comes.

Wright, who said he wasn't anxious before the NFL Draft, won't be scared when he faces the media frenzy. Despite his shy disposition, Wright said he will handle the pressure of the Big Apple with the same approach he used heading into the draft: Ignore it.

"It's nothing," he said. "I mean, it's something, but I'm not going to let it get to me. I can't worry about the media. That has nothing to do with football. There's going to be a lot more distractions other than the media. There's going to be a whole lot of stuff that will try to throw you off. I'm just worried about football. That's it."

Wright, who was taken in the sixth round of the NFL Draft, will have two dates circled on his calendar: Sept. 20 and Dec. 6. It's when Wright and the Giants will face the Dallas Cowboys.

"America's Team?" Wright laughs. "America's Team? I never really did like the Cowboys. I believe they're a really good team, but now that I'm a Giant, I'm going to have to say, ya'll not better than us."

The former UNM cornerback stayed true to his word and didn't watch the NFL Draft. Wright wasn't even the one to take the call from the organization.

"Actually, I didn't get the call. My mother did," Wright said. "I was downstairs playing NCAA on my Xbox 360. I just heard the house phone ring, because they didn't even call my cell phone."

Instead of darting upstairs to pick up the phone, Wright continued playing video games until his mother got his attention.

"She yelled at me, 'You need to go answer the phone! You need to go answer the phone!' I got up and looked on the caller ID, and it said the New York Giants," he said. "I was like, 'Wow, that's who's picking me.'"

Wright said he is still in disbelief.

"I don't know what this feeling is right here," he said. "It's just something I've never felt before."

The dreadlocked corner said he will head out to the Big Apple on either May 4 or 5. Even though he's confident he has the talent to be a starting cornerback in the league, Wright said bursting into the starting scene will be difficult, especially considering the Giants are two years removed from winning the Super Bowl.

"A starter - it's going to be pretty hard," Wright admitted. "But I don't have any doubt in my mind. I can be a starter."
