Women's basketball keeps pace during winter break

Over the nearly 20-day winter break, the UNM women’s basketball team (9-5) remained steady.

The Lobos won when they were supposed to and lost when the odds were against them.
They notched a win over in-state rival New Mexico State on Dec. 20 and handed UNLV a 63-54 loss on Saturday.

Sandwiched between those wins were two predictable losses to No. 10 Texas A&M (84-69) and San Diego State (61-39) at home.

The Lobos stumbled into Mountain West Conference play, absorbing a 22-point beating at home to SDSU. Head coach Don Flanagan said the loss was “embarrassing.”

The Aztecs (11-4) were picked to finish first in the MWC preseason poll, and two of its losses came against ranked Notre Dame and Oklahoma.

While on the road, the Lobos picked themselves up at a Saturday game against UNLV.
In the Lobos’ nine-point win over the Rebels, Jessica Kielpinski scored a game-high 18 points and secured 12 rebounds.

Lauren Taylor and Amy Beggin chipped in 11 and nine points, respectively. The Lobos are 1-1 in conference play and face Utah (9-5) on Tuesday in Salt Lake City.
