LOS ANGELES — The science-fiction blockbuster “Avatar” has earned James Cameron his latest nomination for the top honor from the Directors Guild of America.
Cameron won the guild prize 12 years ago for “Titanic.” Also nominated this year are Kathryn Bigelow for “The Hurt Locker,” Lee Daniels for “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire,” Jason Reitman for “Up in the Air” and Quentin Tarantino for “Inglourious Basterds.”
It’s the second DGA honor for Tarantino, who also was nominated for 1994’s “Pulp Fiction.” Bigelow, Daniels and Reitman are first-time nominees.
The guild announces TV, documentary and commercial nominations Friday. Awards will be presented at a banquet Jan. 30 in Los Angeles.

LOS ANGELES — With Roman Polanski under house arrest in Switzerland, lawyers in his 32-year-old sex case are gathering in a Los Angeles court to discuss future legal moves.
The hearing Wednesday afternoon is described as a status conference before Superior Court Judge Peter Espinoza, who has presided over earlier proceedings in the case. But now an appellate court has offered advice on bringing the matter to a long-sought conclusion. The film director pleaded guilty to one count of sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977.
Polanski’s lawyer asked for a private conference, but a prosecutor prevailed in asking to make the session public. Deputy District Attorney David Walgren told the judge media presence would prevent misconceptions of what might be said behind closed doors.

TAMPA, Fla. — Fox News analyst Brit Hume upset many Buddhists when he suggested last weekend that Tiger Woods turn to Jesus to deal with his sins.
In the past, Woods credited his mother and her Thai Buddhism with giving him the focus needed on the golf course and throughout his life.
Hume said only Christianity can offer Woods forgiveness and redemption.
But critics say Hume misunderstands the point of the 2,500-year-old Eastern faith, which emphasizes the deeds and actions of the person.
Woods, a married father of two, hasn’t been seen in public since a bizarre Thanksgiving weekend car crash outside his Florida home unleashed a torrent of reports about his numerous alleged mistresses.
