The nation’s longest winning streak survived The Pit as San Diego State defeated the UNM men’s basketball team 87-77, its 19th consecutive win this season.
The Lobos (13-5, 1-2 MWC) held a seven point lead early in the game but could not keep up when the No. 6 Aztecs (19-0, 4-0) went on a 12-0 run. During that stretch UNM missed five consecutive shots, en route to a pathetic 29% field goal shooting in the first half.
SDSU grew their lead in the second half to as much as 17. UNM came to within 10, but SDSU would answer each time to maintain their lead.
Drew Gordon finished with a career high 23 points and 14 rebounds, completed half his teams shots in the opening half and was the go to scorer in the paint during the second half. Dairese Gary also had 23 points and Kendall Williams joined the pair in double digits with 11. Phillip McDonald did not make any field goals during the contest, but scored six points from the free throw line.
SDSU’s D.J. Gay was electrifying. He scored a career-high 30 points, including a half court shot at the buzzer to end the first half. All seven of his made field goals came from beyond the arch.
The Lobos continue their Mountain West Conference schedule on Wednesday at Utah and then Saturday at UNLV.
