Monday on the street

On Aug. 27, Bernalillo County became the third county in New Mexico to start issuing same-sex marriage licenses. How do you feel about the county court’s decision to allow same-sex marriage in Albuquerque and in the rest of the county?

Carlos Reyes
Mechanical engineering, freshman

“I’m not opposed to gay marriage, so I personally think it is a good thing. If anyone wants to get married then they should have the right to.”

Melina Laroza
Psychology, senior

“I just don’t think that it should be a political issue or decision in the first place. I’m sure there are many implications that the law or just legalizing gay marriage may have, but for me, I just think it’s personal. I think it’s great. I think there are more negative consequences of not allowing it.”

Sam McIntyre
Computer science, freshman

“I think it’s pretty awesome that it’s starting to get more legal here. I’m totally for it as well. I just hope that eventually it’s totally legal in New Mexico.”

*Patrick Rhoderick *
Medical lab sciences, junior

“I think it’s kind of inevitable … I think it’s a good thing too. People should be able to practice whatever rights they want.”

Shelby Reeves
Teacher education, junior

“I think it’s really awesome. I’m totally pro-gay marriage. I think it’s really great that we have it now … in our county, I guess. The one thing I’m worried about is, you know, laws can be made, but they can also be revoked. So I’m kind of hoping that it stays and everything works out for it. But I’m pretty stoked on it.”
