It’s not easy being green, according to a UNM alumnus.
Brian Jay Jones will present his new book, “Jim Henson: The Biography,” at various locations in Albuquerque this week. He has appeared on multiple media outlets, such as NPR and the Daily Show with Jon Stewart, to promote his work.
Today, Jones will visit the Centennial Engineering Center Auditorium for a lecture and book signing.
“What I’m doing here is I’ve got tons of videos on the show,” he said. “I’m going to introduce a lot of clips that people probably haven’t seen in a long time. I’m trying to keep it to an hour and a half, which may be hard because there’s a lot of stuff. And then there will be a signing afterward and a reception.”
Many of the videos will include iconic Henson characters students at UNM will, for the most part, be familiar with, Jones said.
“I think it will be characters people know,” he said. “I’m trying not to get too obscure. I can get in the weeds really fast because I love all that weird stuff.”
A difficult aspect of putting the show together was figuring out what the college generation would best recognize, Jones said.
“That’s the hardest part, especially as the audiences get younger,” he said. “What do you guys know and what do you not know?”
Jones said he will appear at other bookstores in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, but his UNM lecture would be the main performance.
“I’m doing the good stuff here at UNM,” he said. “The other stuff will get the abbreviated version. UNM gets the good one.”
Senior Alumni Relations Officer Susan MacEachen said students need not RSVP to attend tonight’s free event.
“Most of the other events, like the Smithsonian event I did, that was a paid event,” he said. “Most of the stuff I’ve done has been paid events. That’s why I was glad to be able to come here and to do something free for my hometown crowd.”
