Distinguished Lecturer: Jina Brenneman
Curator Jina Brenneman will be giving a lecture on Canadian-born artist Agnes Martin. Martin lived in Taos, New Mexico from 1954 to 1957, where she created her first semi-abstract piece. Art dealer Betty Parsons saw the biomorphic piece and consequently funded Martin’s move to New York City. The lecture will focus on portions of Martin’s life and work in Taos and inat Columbia University. The lecture will be held Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Raymond Jonson Gallery.
Meeting of the Minds
Ray Hernández-Durán, an associate professor for the department of art and art history, will lead a discussion on African masks. The event is a part of “Meeting of the Minds,” an informal series of conversations about art. The lunchtime discussion will provide an opportunity to look at art while engaging in conversation. The first event will take place today at noon in the UNM Art Museum. Another discussion will be led by assistant professor Meggan Gould regarding “The Material Photograph” on Nov. 7 at the same venue.
New Mexico Work Force Connection
The New Mexico Work Force Connection will be hosting a recruiting event. Job recruiters will visit the job fair, which will feature about 100 locally available manufacturing positions, such as machine operator, general labor and material handlers. Recruiters will conduct on-site, preliminary interviews and participants are asked to dress professionally. The event will be held Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon at 501 Mountain Road NE.
Yoga to the Lobos
Local yoga teachers will be providing free, on-campus yoga classes for the UNM community during the next month. The classes will be every Tuesday at noon and 5:30 p.m. Participants are asked to bring their own mats. The first set of classes will be Tuesday in the Trail/ Spirit room on the third floor of the SUB and at 5:30 in the SUB Mirage room. The second set will be Nov. 12 in the Trail/ Spirit room and at 5:30 in the SUB Luminaria room.
Veteran Appreciation
The Student Veterans Association of the University of New Mexico, along with other veteran organizations in the city, will host a Veteran Awareness Appreciation Fair. Parking for the event will be available at the Lomas Parking Garage. The event will be held at Smith Plaza on Nov. 8 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Veterans Day
UNM will honor its veterans starting with an event titled “Posting and Raising of the Colors” at 9 a.m. near the flag pole south of Scholes Hall. Various speakers will deliver opening remarks and will include UNM’s Dean of Students Tomas Aguirre and Kelsey Davis, president of SVUNM. The ceremony will last until about 10:15 a.m. The Veteran’s Resource Center will also have an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Room 2002 of the SUB.
