As first reported by Rick Wright of the Albuquerque Journal, Cole Gautsche and Kasey Carrier will miss the remainder of the season due to concussion symptoms.
New Mexico’s starting quarterback and running back have accounted for almost 60 percent of the Lobos’ total yards of offense.
Both left during Saturday’s 66-42 loss to Colorado State after receiving blows to the head and didn’t return.
It’s the third time in Gautsche’s two-year career that concussion symptoms have forced him to miss time. He sat out the UTEP game on Sept. 7 after sustaining an injury in the season-opener versus UTSA, and last season he didn’t player at Air Force after getting injured at Hawaii.
Junior signal-caller Clayton Mitchem will now take over under center. Mitchem isn’t as effective running the triple option offense as Gautsche, but he did show improvement against CSU.
The Lobos (3-7, 1-5 MWC) finish the season at No. 15 Fresno State then travel to Boise State in the regular season finale.
