Monday on the Street

Blanca Duarte

Sophomore, mass communication and international studies

“Yes I do. When people come to this country, everyone is trying to look for equal opportunity, and I feel like New Mexico is one of the biggest melting pots that allow different people to come here. Since we say that we are such a diverse college, I think it’s appropriate for us to do that.”

Staphan Carllzzi

Senior, political science

“To me the lottery is a door that only New Mexicans have access to. Not a lot of states have that kind of scholarship, so as many people as can get access to it, the better. Citizenship, I’m not sure that matters as much to me, because if you can prove that you graduated from a high school in the state, if you can prove that you have ambitions to graduate college, if you can maintain the requirements to maintain lottery, I think that should be all you need.”

Danielle Hawkes

Sophomore, strategic communication and media arts

“Yes and no. Yes, because everyone deserves the right to have an education. No, because some kids are from here, and they deserve the lottery scholarship as well.”

David Piersal

Junior, history

“Absolutely. The way I see it, most undocumented students are second generation. They’ve been living here. People who consider themselves American, culturally, they are American. So, I don’t see any reason why we should withhold the opportunity to attend college from them.”
