Headline: Senate Move Seen After Negro Test Group Is Served Sub: Action would end more than two months of protest boycott The student body boycott of Walgreen drug store is expected to be lifted early this week as the result of an apparent change of policy by the local store. The boycott was invoked on Dec. 5 after negotiations failed to alter the Walgreen practice of refusing service to Negro students. A “test group” of students including two Negros was served at the Walgreen fountain Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The group was sent to investigate by the campus chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People following reports that discriminatory practices had been dropped by the establishment. Received Service Several other mixed racial groups have received service there within the past few weeks according to Rev. Jerry Ford of the African Methodist church. “Indications are that the management has reconsidered its former policy,” Herbert Wright, NAACP president, said yesterday. Both Wright and Rev. Ford say that there have been no reports of discrimination in the store since the boycott was declared. Notify Co-operating Group “If the company policy has changed, as seems to be the case, necessary steps will be taken to lift the ban immediately,” Senate President Bob Cox told the Lobo. “The Ministerial Alliance and the AF of L Central Union which have participated in the boycott will be notified of the developments,” he said. Wright’s report came shortly after an announcement from Student Body President Bill Fields that the Student Council will begin work at its next meeting on a proposed anti-discrimination ordinance. The ordinance will be presented to candidates for the city commission for public approval or rejection. Monument to Determination The successful conclusion of the boycott was termed “a monument to the local ideals and determination of the student body and the local organizations which helped us,” by Bob Granick, member of the Council and Judiciary Committee. “Every student can be proud of this achievement,” he said.
