Guards Hugh Greenwood and Deshawn Delaney are leading the team in scoring this season with 11.5 points and 12.7 points per game, respectively. Interestingly, both Greenwood and Delaney averaged more points per game through the team’s 10 losses this season than the 14 wins.
Greenwood is averaging just 10.7 points per game in UNM’s wins this season, due in part to him sharing the ball a little bit more. He is averaging 3.5 assists per winning game, while only 3.2 in losses this year.
Delaney is averaging 12 points per winning game this year, and averaging 13.6 points per game in the losses. He has scored 20 points or more in two of the team’s losses this year while having just one 20 point game in the team’s wins.
Also, Greenwood and Delaney are averaging almost half of the Lobos’ points in the team’s losses. They are combining for 27.3 points per game, while the entire roster is averaging 56.6 points per game in those 10 games.
In wins, however, the duo is combining for 22.7 points per game while the team is averaging 67.5 points per game. They are combining for more assists per game (8.0) in wins while only tallying 4.8 assists in losses.
The pair seems to take the scoring burden upon themselves in tight games when the Lobos are facing an uphill battle on the score line, which could be a reason for lack of production from others on the court.
Continuing a two-game road trip, the Lobos (14-10, 6-6 Mountain West) will travel to Reno, Nevada to face the Nevada Wolf Pack on Saturday after dropping three straight games, two of which were to Colorado teams. This will be the Lobos’ only encounter with the Wolf Pack this season.
Though the Lobos have lost three straight games in a tightly contested Mountain West Conference, they are still right in the mix of making a late-season push. Three games separate the seventh-place Lobos from first-place San Diego State.
Nevada junior forward AJ West, who is averaging 12.6 points per game and 10.1 rebounds per game, leads the charge for the Wolf Pack this season. West is averaging 14.4 points per game in the team’s 11 conference games thus far.
Nevada is 7-16 overall on the year and 3-8 in conference play placing them in 10th place, only ahead of winless San Jose State.
The team did not have media availability leading up to Saturday’s contest.
