UNM professor gets Peter Haas Award

Edl Schamiloglu, distinguished professor of electrical and computer engineering at UNM, has been recognized with the 2015 IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Society’s Pulsed Power Science and Technology Committee’s Peter Haas Award.

Schamiloglu, director of the School of Engineering’s COSMIAC center, received the award in recognition of his contributions to the field of pulsed power, according to a UNM press release.

Schamiloglu is also a three-time recipient of the UNM Science and Technology Corporation Creativity Award, according to the statement.

Museum director appointed to the NSF Advisory Committee

James Dixon, director of the UNM’s Maxwell Museum of Anthropology, has been appointed to the National Science Foundation’s Advisory Committee on Geosciences, according to a UNM press release.

“Dr. Dixon’s appointment is a well-deserved recognition for his contributions to archaeology and anthropology. He has served UNM as a teacher, researcher, and director of the Maxwell Museum, and now he joins a distinguished group of scholars from across the country,” said Chaouki Abdallah, UNM provost.

The Directorate of Geosciences includes the Divisions of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences, Earth Sciences, Ocean Sciences and Polar Programs, according to the statement.

Routine maintenance at Duck Pond scheduled for Spring Break

UNM’s Physical Plant Department Grounds & Landscaping will do routine maintenance on the Duck Pond beginning Friday, according to a UNM press release.

The University administration has asked the campus community to avoid the area during the weeklong maintenance process, according to the statement.

The pond will be drained of its water, and all animals will be collected and housed in oxygenated holding tanks located at the Biology department, according to the statement.

Medicine professor to be honored by American Diabetes Association

Mark R. Burge, a professor of endocrinology and metabolism in the UNM School of Medicine’s Department of Internal Medicine and deputy director of the UNM Clinical and Translational Science Center, will be honored by the American Diabetes Association for his 25 years of service as a volunteer and medical director for the ADA-sponsored New Mexico Camp for Kids with Diabetes.

The ADA will recognize his contributions on March 13 at a fundraising dinner in Albuquerque, according to a UNM press release.

The New Mexico camp is a transformative experience for children living with diabetes, the statement said.

Lobo Living Room to host Dr. Cheryl L. Willman

The UNM Alumni Association is presenting another episode of Lobo Living Room featuring “An Evening with Dr. Cheryl L. Willman” Thursday in the UNM Cancer Center Education Building.

A reception will be held from 6 to 6:30 p.m., followed by the presentation from 6:30 to 7 p.m. and a facility tour afterward, according to a UNM press release.

Willman, the CEO and director of the UNM Cancer and Research Treatment Center, will speak on the CRTC’s future and various accolades awarded to the Center, according to the statement.

Willman is also professor of pathology and medicine and currently holds the Maurice and Marguerite Liberman Distinguished Chair, according to the press release.
