UNMPD received a call at 8:08 a.m. Tuesday about a car fire in the UNMH parking structure on Lomas.
Lt. Tim Stump said police believe the fire was caused by an electrical shortage in a silver 2003 Nissan Moreno parked on the first level.
Although no one was injured, most of the parts inside the hood of the Moreno were melted as a result of the fire.
The cars parked on either side of it, a red Ford Ranger XLT and a silver Volkswagen Beetle, also took major and minor damage, respectively.
There was no damage done to the building as far as the police can tell, Stump said.
Shelby Bishop, a freshman and the owner of the Volkswagen, said it looked like the damage to her car is only exterior and it shouldn’t interfere with her ability to drive it.
The owner of the Ranger will have to repair the melted headlight on the driver’s side before being able to legally drive it again, according to John Perner, the father of the vehicle’s owner.
The UNMH parking structure was shut down for the morning while the fire was put out and damaged cars were towed away from the scene.
Parking in the UNMH structure is again available to the public.
