Football: Langford and Rogers receive MW honors

New Mexico linebacker Ryan Langford and punter Zack Rogers were named Mountain West Defensive and Special Teams Player of the Week by the conference on Monday. It’s the first honor either senior has received during their careers.

Langford had eight tackles along with two key turnovers in UNM’s 31-24 win over Boise State. His first takeaway came on Boise State’s opening drive when he picked off quarterback Brett Rypien at the 3-yard line. The next turnover also came with the Broncos in scoring position, when Langford recovered a fumble at the 1-yard line.

Langford started the game for a suspended Kimmie Carson, who was forced to sit out the first half after a helmet-to-helmet hit against Utah State.

“It feels good after all the work that I’ve put in,” Langford said. “It really came from the help of my teammates. I credit my coaches and my teammates more than anything.”

Rogers earned his award after punting eight times for a 42.1 average, hitting a 32-yard field goal and going 4 of 4 on extra points. The senior saved UNM from giving up points late in the fourth quarter when he was able to get a punt off after a high snap in the end zone.

Injury update

Head coach Bob Davie said quarterback Lamar Jordan is fine after not playing the second half against Boise State. Jordan left the game in the second quarter after a hard hit on a 46-yard completion to wide receiver Marquis Bundy.

“He banged his head off the turf and I thought we were very precautionary in the second half because he really had what amounted to a headache at halftime,” Davie said. “I think it was the right decision because there hasn’t been any ill-effects at all. He’s 100 percent right now.”

National TV

UNM’s home finale against Air Force on Nov. 28 will be broadcast on ESPNU with game time at 8:15 p.m. The Lobos' win at Boise State was shown on ESPNU this past weekend.
