Skiing: UNM takes fifth place with another strong showing from Nordic squad

The Lobos competed in the Spencer James Colorado Invitational this weekend, and finished in fifth-place overall, a similar spot in comparison to their last two events.

The team scored a total of 514 points. 278 points came from the Nordic team, while 236 came from the alpine team.

Alpine

The first event for the women's alpine squad, the slalom featured three UNM skiers placing top-ten. Sara Ottosson finished with a sixth-place finish, followed by Karoline Søvik Mykelbust in ninth-place and Sydney Staples in tenth.

For the men's slalom event things didn't turn out too well, as the top finisher for the Lobos was Rob Greig with a fifteenth-place finish.

The men's giant slalom had a better turnout, though, for the men's alpine squad, with Carl-Johan Öster having a solid seventh-place finish.

For the women's alpine squad there were three skiers placing top-fifteen. Katharine Irwin finished atop the team with her third place finish.

Nordic

For the Nordic team, things went a lot smoother, especially for the women's squad who had a second-place team finish in Nordic events.

A dominant performance from Emilie Cedervärn gave her two first-place finishes for both the 5k freestyle and 15k classical. She nearly racked up half of the women's Nordic team points with 80 out of the 165. For Cedervärn, this was her second win in the freestyle this season, and her fourth overall. In total, she has eight first-place finishes in her collegiate career.

For Cedervärn, the two first-place finishes come on the same grounds the 2016 NCAA championships will be held.

The women's 5k freestyle, with Cedervärn finishing in first-place overall, had two other women's skiers for the Lobos placing top-twelve. Eva Sever Rus finished in eighth-place, while Katie Roivas finished in twelfth-place.

The women's 10k classical was an even better showing for the women's Nordic squad. Again, Cedervärn finished in first-place, with a ninth and tenth-place finish from Katie Roivas and Eva Sever Rus.

The men's 10k freestyle had one top-fifteen finisher for the Lobos. Petteri Vaherkoski finished in eleventh-place, only four seconds behind Montana State's Forrest Mahlen.

Things did look a little brighter in the 20k men's classical for the Lobos. Aljaž Praznik finished in eight-place for the Lobos, followed by a thirteenth-place finish by Vaherkoski.

The next skiing invitational for the Lobos comes around Feb. 20 in Red River, NM.
