Monday on the street: Do you think UNM's official seal is racist?

Do you agree with the accusation that UNM's official seal is racist?

Sofia Lucero, freshman, undecided

"I support UNM and I don't think there was any intention behind the seal to be racist in any way, just to represent the university as a whole and how we are culturally diverse."

Rebecca Kendal, sophomore, music

"I think it's racist because the conquistadors came here and did all sorts of horrible things, and now we are making them a mascot to represent our school and [UNM] doesn't think that is a poor representation of our school?"

Ryan Medhaug, junior, economics

"I can see how it could be viewed as racist, a lot of people here are of Native American decent. I don’t feel like it's necessarily racist, but UNM could be represented in a better way."

Logan Mueller-Jonas, graduate, music

"In my opinion, racism is intentional, and it doesn't seem like that was the case for the seal, so I don't see it as racist."
